Home from ArtFiberFest

None of my projects are completed and my bags aren't unpacked. I did want to write this down though before I forgot it -

And the day came when the risk to remain in a tight bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin

EDIT: ArtFiberFest was wonderful - it was quite small and intimate, like ArtFest used to be in the way back olden days (I crack myself up). Anyway, it was great. On the opening night, Teesha provided us with little packets and taught us how to make a funky quilt square - I became addicted to them and ended up making a whole book!

This is the back of it.
I made signatures of 140 lb watercolor paper that are sewn in - It is a big, fat, floppy book and I love it - +

My first class was happy hooking with Mary Stanley who is just a delightful person. I don't know that I'll ever do this again, but I've always wanted to learn and this environment was perfect for that. I made a little house

Friday, my class was with Kristin Steiner - I love Kristin - She creates the most warm and nurturing classroom environment in the world. This is the accordian book I made in her class.

The last day was a class with Pam Garrison - I was very tired by the last day. But I made this crazy quilt/wacky journal all the same. It's quite wonky and the fabrics really don't show true in this picture, but you get the idea.

My birthday was the Saturday of ArtFiberFest and my friend Suz brought me this yummy cake!

I had a great time, enjoyed doing nothing but playing with fabric and my friends for three days in a beautiful location but was very very very glad to be home!

Things that go bump in the night

I've been working on a 2nd page for October for the Bead Journal Project with a Halloween theme. It's fun to use goofy things and wacky color combinations (actually plum and poison apple green has been my favorite color combo since I was 16 and painted my bedroom those colors much to the horror of my parents),

I'll be at ArtFiberFest through the weekend and won't take this project with me so there'll be no more progress until I return. Usually when I return from art camp I am so full of new ideas that I've learned that I put whatever I've previously been working on on the back burner - I hope I can refocus on this page upon my return as I'd really like to finish it.

heart of the day

i'm making wee dangly beaded hearts as special gifts for people at AFF next week - here's the one from last night

10.09.2007

You'd think I had enough with hearts but

I wanted to whip up a little something for a person that I did a 1-1 exchange with and I came up with this - how sweet - I think that I need to think about making some for valentine's day gifts.

10.07.2007

The first October page is completed!

I've decided to prepare two October pages and then use whichever one is my favorite for the bound book - Here is the first one - I'm quite happy with it.

October page - day 4

i'm starting to get stuck - i'll need to ponder this page for awhile.

October Bead Journal Page - day 3

I'm not certain that I care for those large red navette sorta shaped beads but they are there now and I'm pushing through with the 'no ripping out' goal. Like many things, they'll probably be okay once I get other beads around them.

Walking a crooked path to love (and loving myself)

So the October "when I'm an old woman" page progresses. Robin talked about bead embroidery being therapy and initially I scoffed. Being a crusty, hardened by years of seeing the horrors humans perpetrate on one another ex-therapist, I saw little, if any, validity in her statements - until this piece. I suppose the first few pages I was busy trying to figure out what I was doing and with this piece I was able to just bead without thinking about the process and put more thought into the actual content of what I was beading. I worked until late into the night, until I couldn't see to thread the needle, I didn't want to stop - and when I went to bed all I could think about was the page and what it meant.

So here is the October page on day 2...

10.01.2007

Beginning October

I have so many page ideas in my head, I really hope to get two done for October - maybe my journal pages will be double sided for each month? That would be pretty cool. October is my birth month so I have begun my "when I get old I shall wear purple" page. I've always loved purple and red together - long before there were ladies who wore those colors. When I wore a suit to work, I had a purple linen one that I would wear with a red silk blouse and red 3-inch heels (that would also be when I wore heels so you know it was a very very very long time ago. A particularly snotty woman at the office would always comment on my 'interesting' color choices to which I just would smile sweetly and say 'well bless your heart'. Now Southern women KNOW what 'well bless your heart' means but this woman was a Yankee so she thought that I was being nice.

I got up early this morning to start October before I came into the office. I saw some work done somewhere on the internet that had an interesting sequin application that I tried to mimic, but I didn't quite get it - Now I need to try and remember where I saw that piece so I can go back and look at it again as trying to do something from memory obviously isn't working. I still do like the glimmer of the bit of sequins and I am following the 'don't rip out' method so we'll see how it goes.

The other thing I worked on this weekend were these 'inchies' for a swap. I'm just not getting the 'inchie' thing - but they are done and in the mail and I've made a mental note not to do inchie swaps anymore. They sort of remind me of sea creatures.

Today was a grand day

I went for a bit of a drive at noontime and took some photos - I particularly love the ones from the gardens at Pt. Defiance Park

Learning New Things

I'm getting very excited about attending ArtFIBERfest next month - in a very few weeks I'll be up at Fort Worden with a bunch of my peeps taking three days of wonderful classes. I'm taking a traditional rug hooking course with Mary Stanley
where we'll make one of these sweet little houses. I think I'm going to make mine a mermaid house and decorate it with shell buttons.
The second day I'm taking a fabric book class with Kristen Steiner who is a wonderful teacher and about the sweetest person I've ever met as well. The class is a fabric accordian book and the class includes lots of fabric altering and embellishing techniques - yum.

The last day I'm taking another fabric book class, one that appears to be not as structured as Kristen's, called Sew FAB(ric) Journal with Pam Garrison. This book has paper pages sewn in. I'm thinking the cover with give me ample embellishing opportunities
as well as being an easy, relaxed project for the last day.

When I return I'm taking two on-line classes at Joggles.com -'encrusted crazy quilts' and 'fabric art picture frame' with Alma Stoller - Alma is teaching at ArtFIBERfest and it was a difficult choice between her class and the rug hooking one, so I was happy to see her teaching at Joggles. I've never done an on-line class like this before - I think it sounds like a lot of fun.

Today I learned about a new learning resource on line, Quilt U. I'm looking forward to taking a class there after the first of the year as I believe my plate is quite full for the rest of this year.

In the Spring, there is ArtFest. I didn't go last year and I really missed the 'kick in the pants' it gives me to push my art somewhere new. I was very lucky to get all of my first choice classes - a precious metal clay class with Catherine Witherell ,

Symbolic Icons with Anahata Katkin

and Creative Characters with Karen O'Brien on the last day of the retreat.

My head is spinning with the thought of learning all this new stuff. Lots and lots of photos to follow.

Thinking ahead to October

I love the month of October - I love Fall in general, the way the air smells, the way the wind kicks up and first and foremost, I love October because it marks the beginning of the "candy holidays" and is also my birth month. I may end up doing two pages again in October because I have two projects that I want to do that relate to this month. First of course, is a Halloween page because I love Halloween - I have amazingly wonderful childhood memories of the holiday and I really want to do a Halloween page. I have the perfect bead to start the page, made by my friend Pam at The Blue Between - how precious is this?

and the second page, a birthday page - I'm still thinking about it but I think that I have an idea. I'll keep you posted.

September Bead Journal Project Page Completed

And I am very happy that it's done. I learned quite a few things doing this page. First and foremost, that if I'm going to do something like this again that I'll attached the canes/vines/stems/whatevers first, then do the entire background, then apply the flowers/leaves/berries/whatevers. Attempting to do the background beading around all of the details was not pleasant - particularly for someone without a lot of experience like myself. But it's done and I'm pleased with it for the most part. I can see all the mistakes but I suppose that is normal. Now in the drawer it goes with all of it's sister pages waiting for binding.

9.11.2007

One step closer to the finish line

I've just the background left to fill in on this piece. My beauty and pain page - it seems rather fitting to me that I will finish this today - September 11th.

September page - day 7 - not much more to go

Ready for thorns

I've dyed the cording to make the blackberry vines with and found some wonderful little dagger beads to use for the thorns - but alas and alack, laundry and dust mountains call me today - Hopefully there will be some beading time this evening.

9.07.2007

Plugging away on September

Sometimes I need to be a bit more planful and remind myself of exactly how long it is going to take to cover an area with 3mm sequins

8.29.2007

On with September

Day three of work - beading the flower petals is so meditative - I don't have to think (which sometimes is a very good thing) - Now that I think about the rest of the page, I really wish that I had some form of 'beading training'. I would like to make a 3-D cane or two to sew the leaves and berries onto - I would think that doing a peyote chain thing-a-ma-bob would work for this. I watched someone once do a peyote stitch around a drinking straw - that would be perfect. But, alas and alack, I don't know how to do even a straight peyote stitch, much less a circular one - or any other type of proper bead stitch either. And so I'll improvise - maybe bead around a piece or two of cording? I'll think of something. I'm not patient enough to wait until someone teaches me how to do the peyote thing. I'm sure Mei would do it in a heartbeat if I drove up there - but immediate need gratification will rear its' ugly head once again.

I like doing the beading on something already plotted out, but I really think that I like just 'having at it' better. Next month perhaps I'll go back to random abandon with my page and see where it takes me.

Jump Start on September

It's felt like fall here for some time now - really it's almost felt like winter. I got an early start on my September page last night. I've been beading eggs for another collaborative project, and am working on one that is all teeeny weeeny pastel delicas and I just needed a break from eggs. I looked at the pile of doll forms that I have ready and they didn't speak to me either so I decided to start September.

Reminded of the sunfower that Charles is so tickled to have grown, I made a rough sketch of a sunflower on one side of the heart - the other side will have blackberries - a constant source of annoyance to me, particularly in September when it's time to put the garden to bed - there was no garden this year, my arthritis has pretty much forbidden much gardening as of late - but Charles grew container gardens on the porch, full of wildflowers (and his sunflower yanked from the yard where it was planted by the birds) - even without a garden, there are blackberries to deal with - the Himalyan blackberries are to the Pacific Northwest what kudzu is to the South. I don't want to poison them - the birds nest in the brambles and bunnies live in there too - plus everything trickles down and that weed poison will end up poisoning many things in it's path. They are near to impossible to cut down - the canes are thick and the thorns are huge and very sharp. The only real way to get rid of them is to dig them up and since they are taller than I am, that's a job I'm not ready to take on. In late September, after the birds have eaten the berries, I attack - with rock salt and vinegar - it keeps them at bay (kinda) - they've lifted my fence and grown into my pottery shed - you'd think I'd be more ruthless with them.

And so September will be my love and hate page - There are many things to love and hate about September - September is the month my father died and is the month my wedding anniversary would have been in if I were still married. It is a month of beginnings and endings - of sunflowers and thorns.

Long Time No Bead

.

I've actually been working on a couple of little things - just very little is done, I finished another egg for that art exchange I'm participating in - and started yet another one - beading an egg with delicas takes a long time - a very long time - particularly since my hands have been bothering me so I take many more breaks than I'm used to.

It's also been very hectic - no it's been chaotic - at work and that tires me. I come home, sit in my chair, look at my beads and stare into space until it's time for bed. I've been pondering my September page - It's interesting to me that since I've begun this BJP my color pallette has changed rather dramatically, resulting in a need for me to add beads to my stash that I never had a need for before so today I headed down to Shipwreck for some topazy/goldish bead goodness. Since this entire project is a learning experience for me - a beginning in bead embroidery, this time I thought I'd change up and draw the pattern onto the fabric first and then embroider, rather than just going willy-nilly as is my normal procedure.

While not totally bead related, but sorta kinda - I'm very excited to be taking this class in October, along with some others. I can see this rug-hooked house with beads and buttons - I haven't had a proper vacation in a couple of years now so I'm really looking forward to this trip.

Eggheadz #2

The kids came over to visit yesterday which gave me time to just sit and bead on this egg - these are really addictive.

8.18.2007

eggheadz

I'm participating in a flickr group where we were each sent 2 wooden eggs to decorate that will then be exchanged - I decided to try a beaded egg in the beaded bead fashion. All of the web instructions that I could find for beaded eggs called for glue which didn't seem like much of a challenge - this is my work after 2 days - there are still a few bald spots that need a little fill and I learned some things to try on the next one, but this was a fun, relatively quick, project. Drilling the holes in the wooden eggs was actually the hardest part.

I hate being "stuck"

And stuck is where I am right now on this doll I've been working on for the past while - I'm stuck on the parrots for one - I ordered some parrot beads that are way too small, doubt my skill level at being able to bead them successfully and don't like them left plain. Something will pop into my head eventually. I was stuck on the ruffle at the bottom of her dress - mostly because I don't care for the color combination used and then it came to me (duh) that I could just change it with the beads so that's the plan. Next on the agenda, a Virgin of Guadalupe.

The RA pity party

Has ended for the most part. I was first diagnosed with arthritis when I was 15 and had shattered some bones in my foot. Slowly it progressed but I always thought I had a 'deal' with the arthritis fairy that it would stay out of my hands. I suppose waiting until I was nearly 53 to go there, isn't too bad all things considered. There are many many many things far worse than this. No new art to post today but here's a picture of a moasaic I did as a solstice gift for someone last year. It makes me want to get the clay out again.

8.13.2007

in progress

Not much to say

I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in my hands a few days ago and am pondering exactly how to continue doing art with hands that are failing me. In lieu of any new art, here are some pictures of some lovely beads made by some wonderful women on etsy.com. My pity party should end soon and I'll be posting more art.

Thinking ahead

I received this bead in the mail today that I think will be the focal point of my September Bead Journal Project page. September around here means the Western Washington Fair as I live about a hop, skip and a jump from the fairgrounds. The Fair (we always capitalize the word Fair in Puyallup) means all sorts of things but particularly the harvest, so I'm thinking September will feature blackberries and be full of berry colors.

p.s.
The bead is from Teeniebeads.

Bead Journal Project - August day 3

This one is beginning to have a mind of its' own. Charles thinks it looks like a headdress for Carmen Miranda or a Vegas showgirl. I'm thinking it needs fruit and I think that, somewhere in this house, there is a strand of glass fruit. I really like the addition of the black - it grounds the piece - or something - maybe I just like black beads. In any event - here is work after day 3.

8.01.2007

August Bead Journal Page - day 2

I'm feeling better about it today - I still have such a long way to go in learning how to get those beads to butt up perfectly against one another - but I am happier with the movement of the piece now.
